Sore Neck? Don’t Just Stretch It… Strengthen It! 💪🦴

Gentle neck strengthening exercises for neck pain

Neck pain is one of the most common problems we see at Bath Chiropractic Clinic. Whether it’s related to long hours at a desk, driving, gym training, sport, or everyday activities, many people experience neck stiffness, discomfort, or reduced confidence with movement.

When your neck feels sore, stretching is often the first thing people try.

While stretching can feel good and may help with movement in the short term, improving the strength and endurance of the muscles around your neck, shoulders, and upper back can also play an important role in managing neck pain.

Research suggests that exercise therapy, including strengthening exercises, can help reduce pain and improve function in people with neck pain. Building strength is not about making your neck rigid, it’s about improving your body’s ability to tolerate everyday loads and movements.

Think of it as building capacity, confidence, and resilience. 💪

Why strengthen your neck?

Your neck muscles work constantly throughout the day to support the weight of your head and control movement.

They help you with activities such as:

💻 Working at a computer
📱 Looking at your phone
🚗 Driving
🏋️ Exercising or playing sport
🛌 Moving comfortably throughout the day

Improving neck strength and endurance may help your muscles better tolerate these demands and improve your confidence with movement.

3 gentle neck strengthening exercises to try ✅

In this video, Charlie, our Chiropractor at Bath Chiropractic Clinic, demonstrates three simple exercises designed to help improve neck strength and control.

These exercises should feel controlled and comfortable. They should not cause pain.

1. Side-Lying Lateral Neck Flexions

This exercise targets the muscles on the side of your neck and helps build strength through controlled movement.

How to perform:

  • Lie on your side with your head supported in a comfortable position

  • Gently lift your head away from the surface using the muscles on the side of your neck

  • Slowly lower back down with control

  • Repeat on both sides

Focus on quality movement rather than forcing range.

2. Prone Cobra Exercise

The prone cobra helps strengthen the muscles around your upper back and shoulders, which work alongside your neck to support posture and movement.

How to perform:

  • Lie face down with your arms by your side

  • Gently lift your chest away from the floor

  • Draw your shoulder blades back and down

  • Hold briefly before lowering with control

Keep the movement gentle and avoid forcing your neck into extension.

3. Seated Neck Isometrics (All Directions)

Isometric exercises involve activating your neck muscles without creating much movement.

How to perform:

  • Sit tall with your shoulders relaxed

  • Place your hand against your forehead and gently push your head into your hand

  • Repeat from the back and both sides of your head

  • Create gentle tension without forcing movement

These exercises help train the muscles around your neck in a controlled way.

Important: These exercises should not cause pain ⚠️

Exercise should feel challenging, but it should not cause sharp pain or significantly increase your symptoms.

If an exercise does not feel right:

  • Reduce the intensity

  • Reduce the number of repetitions

  • Stop and seek advice if symptoms persist

Everyone’s neck pain is different, which is why understanding your individual symptoms and goals is an important first step.
